In many countries, fast food is becoming cheaper and more widely available. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Nếu đề ra dạng Agree- disagree bạn có thể viết Counter – Argument: Disagree:

More and more people are becoming overweight. Some people suggest the solution to this problem is to increase the price of fast food. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

  • Admittedly, increasing fast food’s price might reduce its consumption to some extent. People are likely to cut back on their eating of fatty food, snacks and sugary drinks, and turn to healthier choices such as home-made food
  • However, I believe this policy might bring more drawbacks than benefits: Impoverished people might not be able to afford food because healthy foods would become even more expensive due to the policy’s knock-on effects…In addition, this might have adverse impacts on the food industry, leading to the loss of jobs and incomes for millions of people…

Fast food has become an integral part of today’s hectic lifestyle. Its increased availability and affordability may exacerbate a number of health challenges facing many nations. However, I believe that this demerit of a thriving fast food industry is outweighed by its contributions to the economy and people’s lives.

On the one hand, the ubiquity of low-cost fast food outlets in major cities can have adverse impacts on urban citizens’ well-being. Because these types of food are typically high in fat and low in fibre, excessive consumption of them may increase the risks of hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Furthermore, a fast food based diet could promote a sedentary lifestyle among regular consumers, which would eventually jeopardise their health.

Nevertheless, I believe the dazzling economic benefits of a growing fast food market far exceed the drawbacks mentioned. In fact, fast food giant corporations such as McDonald’s and Burger King are among the world’s largest employers, and their contributions lie in not only job creation but also tax payment and GDP growth. Without them, millions of underprivileged and vulnerably low-skilled workers would be out of a job.

Another key merit of fast food’s rising popularity and affordability is perhaps the ultimate convenience consumers can get. By purchasing pre-cooked and quickly-processed foods, people may save a great deal of time and energy, and therefore be able to focus more on work and recreational activities. Most importantly, the increasingly inexpensive price of fast food means that low-income households can gain an affordable access to a variety of tasty foods to satisfy their hunger. This does not necessarily mean that consumers are sacrificing their health for convenience since a majority of fast food chains are now offering healthier choices to conscious eaters.

In conclusion, it seems that the growth of fast food market brings far greater benefits than drawbacks. Above all, the industry is trying to mitigate its detrimental impact by providing customers with a wider range of healthy options. (324 words)
