If I had to choose the most impressive historical building in Hanoi, I would opt for the One Pillar Pagoda. This iconic structure is symbolic of Hanoi’s rich culture and that’s why it’s a must see for both local and international tourists. I myself have visited the pagoda countless times. It’s not only a fascinating historical site but also an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

The One Pillar Pagoda is located next to the mighty Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, which is also a renowned attraction of the city. This Buddhist temple was originally built in 1049 by an emperor. According to a legend, the emperor used to pray at pagodas for a son since he was old but had no heir. One night, he dreamed of a goddess sitting on a lotus throne and giving him a baby. Soon after, the queen gave birth to a prince. The Emperor built this pagoda to express his deep gratitude to that goddess, and it was first called Dien Huu pagoda, which means long happiness and prosperity.

The One Pillar Pagoda is regarded as a symbol of Hanoi due to its architectural splendor that has been around for a thousand years. The original pagoda was built on a single pillar made of wood but it was destroyed during the Indochina War. The pagoda has been restored and renovated several times to preserve its unique architecture intact, except that the pillar is now made of concrete. What I’m most fascinated with is the main part of the building which is distinctively shaped as a lotus blossom with 8 petals. It showcases the elaborate craftsmanship of artisans constructing this pagoda.
