Whenever I hear the words “plastic waste”, the first thing that comes to mind is the heavily polluted river running through the eastern part of my city.
Long ago, the river was immense and full of life. It made its way across the entire land and used to be the main source of fish and fresh water for local inhabitants. Due to rapid urbanization, the river has been impounded and gradually become dead. Its water has turned into black due to severe contamination. Dumping of household garbage including plastic bags, bottles, food wrappings and food containers into the river has led to its massive pollution. It is now incapable of sustaining any life. I can’t stand the pervasive, disgusting odor of its contaminated water during scorching summer days.
It’s disturbing to see the river in such an appalling condition but there is not much I can do other than trying to pursue sustainable shopping by saying no to disposable or non-recyclable plastic products. I wish local people would all become more conscious of their impact and joined hands with the authority to bring the river back to life. I know it would be an enormous and time-consuming effort but at the end of the day, we must be responsible for what we have done to the natural world. Otherwise, our future generations will also have to pay a high price for mistakes that are not their own.
