Have you ever lost your way?
Yes, I’ve got lost countless times in my life. I always struggle to navigate my way in unfamiliar places, especially in crowded cities with a maze of little lanes like Hanoi. However, I’ve realised that getting lost can sometimes be a blessing as I get the opportunity to explore fascinating areas by chance.
How can you find your way if you are lost?
Well, first I would ask one or two locals for directions because I find their instructions always more straightforward to follow than navigation apps. If I can’t find any, I will try to figure out my way on physical maps and call my friends for support or resort to Google maps.
Are you good at reading maps?
No, I’ve never been proud of my spatial thinking skills. I always have a hard time interpreting the overwhelming amount of information presented by a map. Sometimes, I do know how to navigate my way on a map, but I still get lost in real life and I have no idea why.
Have you ever helped someone who got lost?
Of course. I’ve been in their shoes you know. A couple of years ago, on my way home, I saw two foreign visitors standing at a traffic light in Hanoi Old Quarter with a map in their hands. They looked confused and tired so I guess they might have lost their way. I offered to guide them to their hotel and they were so thankful for that.
