This topic reminded me of a time I urged my friend to step out of her comfort zone. It was a team presentation on Vietnamese Culture and our group’s topic was traditional architecture.
It was tough for us, really. The topic was completely unfamiliar, preparation time too short and on top of that, our group members rarely hanged out with each other in the class. Our first meeting was rather chaotic. We argued with each other for most of the time and failed to reach an agreement on which regions to focus on. Everyone preferred to go their own way and no one volunteered to be in charge.
We had only 5 days left and I couldn’t just sit still. I tried to persuade Linh, one of the members, to assume the responsibility of a team leader. At first she rejected because she thought it might be extremely tough for an introvert like her to take charge. I din’t give up because I saw her enormous enthusiasm about the topic and above all I wanted her to take up the challenge and do something she had always dreaded. I talked and talked like forever and finally, she said yes. Our following meeting was super productive and to my surprise, Linh was excellent in uniting us and assigning suitable work for each member.
Eventually, the big day came; it was time to shine and we did. Our group was awarded the most outstanding presentation by both our lecturer and other classmates. I still feel on top of the world when reminiscing about this unexpected outcome. It has shown me how important motivation is, and that having different perspectives in a team can truly make a difference.
IDIOMS: be in charge / feel on top of the world / make a difference
