Leisure activities are of paramount importance to the healthy development of children. It is believed by many that children should do organized activities during their spare time while some argue that they should be allowed to do whatever they want. I incline to the view that children should be able to enjoy free play under adults’ supervision.
On the one hand, there are compelling reasons to encourage children’s participation in organized extracurricular activities. Firstly, these activities tend to be designed by experts and thus parents can rest assured that they are beneficial or at least harmless for their little ones. Under strict supervision of adults, children are unlikely to indulge in detrimental activities such as playing violent video games or watching too much television as opposed to when they are left to their own devices. Furthermore, organized activities such as sports, community service or cultural activities can foster children’s cognitive skills and interpersonal skills in relatively safe learning environments. By participating in summer camps, for example, children can make new friends and acquire valuable life skills.
On the other hand, free play can be of immense help to children, especially during their formative years. When children have the freedom to choose their own play materials and how to play, they can become excellent problem-solvers later in life. This is because free play can boost their creative thinking, imagination and independent learning ability. Without a structured environment, children are able to express themselves freely, which means that their talents might be discovered and nurtured from a very young age.
