Is it important to learn history at school?
Yes, of course. Children can benefit a lot from the subject. To begin with, they can gain a sense of belonging when learning about the past of their ancestors, their hometown or their country. Besides, they can obtain valuable insights into the way people used to live in the past and learn from their failure and success. Finally, I believe history is closely related to culture and cultural awareness is vital for those who are going to travel the world or do business with international partners in the future.
Do Vietnamese students like to study history? Why?
I don’t think so. Though history is a compulsory subject at school, the teaching method for this subject is rather outdated and ineffective. Teachers often ask students to read textbooks and learn by heart to cram for exams so students tend to get bored to death with their lessons.
How can teachers make the subject more interesting?
There are several things teachers can do to make the subject more appealing to young learners. First of all, they should incorporate more visual stuff like pictures or historical movies and documentaries to make their lessons more captivating. This is because young people tend to be visually inclined. They prefer something in color or motion rather than boring textbooks. On top of that, young people are digitally savvy so teachers should include some interactive games so that students can play and have fun while learning.
