Yes, this type of business is very common in Vietnam. Actually, a large number of publicly-listed companies like Vingroup are family-owned. They operate in a multitude of economic sectors, including banking, real estate, manufacturing and food and beverage. They have generated millions of jobs and made huge contributions to the growth of Vietnamese economy.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of working for a family business?

I’d say that for outsiders, I mean for employees who aren’t related to the owning family, the extra benefits the business offers seem negligible. It’s just like any other company, except that a family business might have a more casual work environment. Since several members of the family are working together, the company’s policies might not be too rigid. Besides, these businesses tend to be established and run by Vietnamese people so locals might find its corporate culture familiar.

But then again, family business might not be an ideal work environment. Non-family employees may not be equally treated as family-related ones. Even for family members, though it’s always easier to get along with their family than with strangers, conflicts at work, especially in decision making, are inevitable. Work-related arguments could take a toll on their personal relationship, which in turn might have damaging effects on the business if one of them decide to quit. In other words, it’s easy for family members to mix their personal life with their professional life, leading to disastrous consequences.

Are family businesses common in Vietnam? What kinds of business do they do?

(family businesses are run/ operated by a family) Yes. There are many businesses run by a family in VN. They operate in both production and service sectors but the most common ones are small restaurants, hair salons, clothing stores and convenience stores.

What are the advantages of working for a family business?

Without a doubt, family businesses can offer a friendly/ family-like work environment/ work culture: people can enjoy more flexible working hours: For instance , they can start work at 10. am instead of 8.am or 9.am, and leave work earlier. Besides, people might have a better chance of getting promoted when working for a family business because it often has a small number of employees, I mean low competition.

What are the disadvantages of working for a family business?

Low job security / stability + biased treatment for non-family employees. For instance, When choosing a director or a manager for the business, family members are often favored.

Do Vietnamese people like working for a family business?

I reckon that only a small number of Vietnamese people are interested in working for family businesses. Most of them prefer state-owned / public corporations or international corporations because the chance/ likelihood/ possibility of getting a promotion in family-run businesses is lower than in large corporations. Besides, family businesses tend to have limited financial resources so they usually offer lower salaries and fewer fringe benefits such as paid holidays and bonuses.

Financial resources + human resource/ capable employees (innovative/creative ideas/ solutions) + a great leader

Do you think advertising is important to businesses?

Yes. Advertisements help businesses attract/ reach more customers and increase their brand awareness. This means that they can boost their sales and make greater profits. Additionally/ Added to that, companies can use advertisements to attract and recruit talented people. Finally, it’s necessary for businesses to advertise because they need to compete against their competitors/ rivals.

Do you think advertising should be honest?

The way I see it, it’s crucial for businesses to tell the truth about their products and services. This can make their customers satisfied, and therefore they are likely to trust these companies and become loyal to them.

How can companies recruit the right employees?
