If I had to choose a plant that represents our country, I would probably go for rice. It’s a staple food of Vietnam and it’s symbolic of our diligence, resilience, prosperity and optimism. 

I was born and grew up in a little village where people used to make a living out of two crops per year. I loved watching rice grow from tiny seedlings to fully-grown plants bearing flowers and then ripe grains. The image of endless rice fields with winding rivers and scattered conical hats has remained the most breathtaking and endearing scenery I’ve seen in my entire life. Whenever I felt down in the dumps, I would climb onto my house’s rooftop where I could enjoy a panoramic view over the surrounding paddies and the scenery would instantly put me at ease.

Indeed rice holds great economic and cultural significance in Vietnam. It’s one of our major exports and we take great pride in producing the finest rice of the world which is the ST25 fragrant rice variety. Rice can be grown almost anywhere in Vietnam from terraced paddies in northern mountainous areas to flooded fields in the Mekong Delta in the south. It’s fair to say that for Vietnamese people, rice is life. No family meal is complete without rice. Steamed sticky rice, in particular, is a crucial festive food of Vietnam. It’s offered to our ancestors and local Gods to express our gratitude to them. Interestingly, most of our traditional festivals are centered around the planting or harvesting season of rice. In short, rice deserves to be the national plant of Vietnam.
