Are cars more popular nowadays than in the past? Why?
Yeah, it’s totally true. Car ownership in Vietnam has been rising rapidly over the last decades. Due to higher income and improved standard of living, more and more people (in Vietnam) are now able to afford their own cars.
What are the advantages of cars?
Without a doubt, car owners can enjoy ultimate freedom, convenience and comfort. They are fully protected from dirt, toxic air, emissions and noise. On top of that, cars are considered a symbol of income status which many people take great pride in. No wonder, cars have become increasingly preferred and widely used.
What are the disadvantages of cars?
I suppose the biggest drawbacks of cars, especially gas-powered cars, is that they release toxic emissions that exacerbate air pollution and global warming. Millions of people around the world are suffering from respiratory diseases that are closely linked to poor air quality in their living area. Additionally, the increased number of cars on the road is the principal reason why congestion is getting worse in major cities. Not to mention, it might be extremely tough to find a car park in crowded neighborhoods.
Will there be more cars in the future?
Well, while a handful of major cities around the world are striving to become more bicycle-friendly, I believe developing countries will continue to see a drastic increase in the number of cars on the road. It’s hard for local people to give up the comfort of their private vehicles unless public transport is significantly improved and cities become more walkable. At least we can be relieved that people are switching from gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles.
How to reduce cars?
As I mentioned, it’s no easy task to persuade people to stop using cars. The government should take bold actions to encourage them to reduce their dependency on private vehicles. One possible solution is to establish more car-free zones in urban areas. Another remedy is to impose a high green tax on drivers, which might force them to cycle or walk more. And most importantly, the government should make it a priority to advance public transport systems and mitigate overcrowding in big cities.
Is it important to develop public transport?
Absolutely. Cities are becoming overcrowded and transport demands have also been rising dramatically over the last decades. Unfortunately, the transport infrastructure in most cities cant keep up with their population growth, leading to severe congestion and air pollution. If more people are willing to use public transport, these problems will be alleviated and cities will become more livable and environmentally friendly.
What kinds of cars do people in Vietnam prefer?
I reckon that many Vietnamese people are huge fans of Japanese car brands such as Toyota and Honda. They are reliable, power-saving, affordable and on top of that suitable for the climate of Vietnam. Particularly, German cars are widely seen as fancy, smart and high-performing given their exorbitant prices.
At what age should people be able to get a driving license?
From my perspective, people should be at least 18 in order to obtain a driving license as this might improve road safety considerably. Drivers need to be emotionally mature so that they can handle precarious or unexpected situations they face while driving. Besides, young people tend to become more responsible when they reach 18. At this age, they are more aware of road safety, and thus are less likely to commit traffic offenses such as speeding or drunk driving.
