Scientific studies have an important role to play in modern society. It is argued by some that they should prioritize (=give priority to) solving medical problems while many claim that they should focus on other issues. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and then I will give my own perspective.
On the one hand, it is crucial for scientists to focus on tackling the world’s medical challenges (crises). The first reason is that a healthy population is paramount to / vital to the development of countries. When people are in good health, they can improve their productivity and efficiency, meaning that they can contribute more to their communities. Furthermore, medical crises seem more urgent and entails serious repercussions for societies. For instance, the Covid-19 pandemic had spread to all countries around the world in less than a year, claiming millions of lives. If scientists had found viable vaccines earlier, many people would have been saved from this fatal infection.
On the other hand, there are convincing reasons for scientific research to focus on other existential threats such as environmental pollution and climate change. Air pollution which is mainly caused by burning fossil fuel, for instance, is the leading cause of premature mortality worldwide. If scientists cannot find a way to produce enough sustainable energy for the world’s ever-growing population, the future of humanity would be gloomy. Likewise, due to global warming and climate change which is closely linked to fossil fuel combustion, weather extremes such as storms and prolonged droughts have become more intense and frequent across the globe. Vast regions on Earth might become uninhabitable unless scientists can address the challenges concerning clean energies.
In conclusion, while it is crucial for scientists to solve medical problems, I believe scientific research should also focus on addressing other pressing issues such as environmental pollution and climate change.
