Some experts believe that when a country is already rich, any additional increase in economic wealth does not make its citizens happier. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Disagree – Concession – counter argument
Some experts assert/ claim that for economically advanced nations, greater economic growth cannot make their citizens more satisfied with life. I disagree with this assertion and this essay will elaborate on my reasons.
Admittedly, extra economic wealth might not make affluent people happier. It is scientifically proven that when people reach a certain income threshold, they will not feel more content just because of increased earning. As their essential needs such as food, shelter, education and financial security have been fulfilled, they now seek advanced needs for esteem and self-actualization that money alone cannot bring.
However, I believe that the greater economic growth of developed nations can make the majority of their low-income and middle-income people happier. To begin with, not all citizens of developed countries are wealthy and a considerable number of them are still struggling to find jobs and meet their fundamental needs. Therefore, strong economic development can create more employment opportunities and higher income for these people, meaning that they can raise their standard of living and thus feel happier. Furthermore, economic growth results in increased tax revenue for the government. This means that there will be greater government spending on public services and social programs such as free education and healthcare, which allows underprivileged citizens to enjoy a pleasant and worry-free life.
