What are some common sources of noise?

Well, I believe the majority of noise is generated by human activities. As people are constantly on the move these days, traffic has probably become the largest source of noise pollution across the globe. Urban streets are filled with irritating blaring horns days and nights. Other major sources include building and commercial activities. Roaring sounds of heavy machinery and equipment on construction sites are just as annoying as loud speakers and stereo systems in bars, clubs or shopping malls. Apart from outdoor noise, people can also be tortured by indoor noise caused by inconsiderate neighbours who scream or play loud music at odd hours.

What are the effects of loud noise?

Well, noises at hazardous levels can have a range of adverse impacts on our life. Occupational diseases such as hearing loss and mental disorders are closely linked to deafening sounds of industrial machines. Prolonged exposure to destructive noise from traffic or entertainment facilities can also increase the risk of developing serious conditions including stress, hypertension and depression. Indoor noise caused by loud speakers, TV or washing machines has no direct health effect but it can interfere with work, study, conversation, rest or sleep. Overall, noise pollution may diminish our quality of life in so many different ways.

What can be done to reduce noise?

Firstly, there should be stricter legal punishments on offenders who cause noise above a certain limit. Another possible solution could be for the government to run campaigns on mass media to raise public awareness of noise pollution. Finally, it’s crucial to avoid side-by-side industrial and residential buildings in urban planning.

What are some noisy places?

Well, as I mentioned most noises are manmade so the more crowded a place is, the noisier it gets. Streets, shopping malls, bars, clubs and sport grounds in downtown areas are among the noisiest places on earth I believe.

Do you think there is more noise today in the city than in the past?

Definitely. As an ever-increasing number of people are migrating to urban areas in search of a better life, major cities in the world are becoming more and more crowed. Bustling metropolises such as Tokyo, Los Angeles and Bangkok are known as sleepless cities due to relentless commercial and social activities. Increasingly severe traffic congestion also contributes to the alarming rates of noise pollution.

Do you think cities will become noisier in the future?

Well, that’s a tough question. It’s hard to guess but I don’t think noise pollution can get any worse. People are becoming more concerned about this pressing problem and I believe future generations will take bold actions to tackle it effectively. With accelerating rate of technology advancement, it is completely possible to create peaceful and tranquil neighbourhoods in the future.
