I would say that people in rural areas of Vietnam are more into outdoor activities than their urban counterparts. This is mainly because the environment in the countryside is cleaner and greener. Also there is no traffic congestion so villagers can go out whenever they feel like. However, I do notice that an increasing number of urban dwellers in Vietnam, especially youngsters are getting more enthusiastic about outdoor recreational activities like cycling, going on a picnic or camping. And this is all good news.
What kinds of leisure activity do Vietnamese people like? Why?
In cities, there is a wide range of activities for urban citizens to enjoy their leisure time. The most preferred ones include reading, watching movies, dining out, going to amusement parks or chilling out at shopping malls. Besides, doing exercise is also popular, especially among adults. Many are keen on running, jogging, and brisk walking, such sort of things. In the countryside, most people are fond of going fishing or gardening, and they can enjoy them free of charge.
Do you think old people and young people enjoy the same kinds of outdoor activity?
I don’t think so. People of different ages have different hobbies and preferences. Like for instance in Hanoi, teenagers and young adults are fond of going to amusement parks or going on a picnic while old people are keen on jogging, playing chess or doing Taichi. As well as this, it seems to me that youngsters usually don’t mind crowded and noisy events like outdoor concerts but elderly people always try to avoid them at all cost. All in all, there are few outdoor activities that they enjoy in common.
Why it is important for people to have time for outdoor activities?
Without a doubt, spending enough time outdoors can do wonders for people’s health. Outdoor activities are perfect opportunities for them to break from work or study, and recharge their energy. Maintaining a healthy work/life balance can boost their mental wellbeing, leading to improved productivity and performance. Most important, leisure activities such as travelling and eating out offer dazzling economic benefits since many jobs are generated by them.
How has technology changed the way people enjoy their outdoor activities?
I would say that modern technologies have encouraged people to lead a sedentary lifestyle and become less interested in outdoor recreation. In the past, people used to work or play outdoors most of their time because there weren’t many things to do at home. Today, however, there is a wide range of fascinating activities for people to kill their time without having to leave the comfort of their home, such as playing video games, surfing social media, watching the latest movies on Netflix, the list could go on and on.
Do you think old people have more leisure time than young people?
I do think so. Most old people have retired from work and their children have also grown up so there are almost no commitments to occupy their time. The thing is that their health tends to decline rapidly so they might find it hard to truly enjoy their ample leisure time.
Do you think men have more leisure time than women?
I suppose so. In most families, both men and women are now working full time. However, women are still responsible for the majority of household duties while men, especially Asian men, can feel free to spend their leisure time after work in bars and pubs. This is so unfair and the stereotype that men are not suitable to be a caregiver is just a lame excuse for this perpetuated gender inequality.
What do you think are important to outdoor activities (money, weather, people, etc)?
When it comes to outdoor activities, obviously the weather is of paramount importance. If it is raining heavily, people are less likely to go out, let alone enjoy them. As for other factors, I reckon that a healthy environment is also equally important. Indeed, a lot of schools in Hanoi have canceled their outdoor activities due to severe air pollution.
Is going out with friends different from going out alone?
Undoubtedly, hanging out with friends is more enjoyable than doing it alone. The more the merrier, you know. Indeed, social interactions account for a large part of outdoor fun because joy seems to be multiplied when being shared. As well as this, effort-consuming activities such as camping can be organized more effectively if there is a group of participants.
