Are advertisements useful for people?
I guess most of them are not. I’ve never bought anything merely because I saw it in an ad. I do believe consumers are now becoming smarter and it’s easier for us to find candid reviews or feedback about a certain product or service. For example, when I need to buy cosmetics I will go online (usually on Facebook or a relevant forum) and ask people questions such as what is the best brand on the market? Have you used it before? & what do you think about it? By doing so I can obtain a lot of useful and trustworthy information. So, compared to word of mouth recommendations, ads have rather limited impact on our buying decisions and generally we can live well without them.

Are advertisements effective?
In general, it’s very difficult to measure the effectiveness of ads, especially those aimed at increasing customer awareness rather than calling them to buy. Advertisers usually claim that a large part of their ad cost is just a waste of money. The problem is they are not sure which parts are ineffective to cut out. So they just keep on using ads. However, I believe ad campaigns can be very effective if they are planned and carried out properly: targeting the right audience with the right message and at the right time.
What do you think about advertisements?
I think ads are a part of our life now. No matter how much we want to get rid of them, we can’t avoid them altogether. Actually, some video commercials are enjoyable to watch. They are funny, entertaining, educational and motivational. This type of ads can easily go viral and lead to enormous increase in brand awareness, an extremely valuable asset for companies or organizations. Most of ads however are annoying, superficial, gender biased or even ridiculous. Generally I don’t pay much attention to ads unless they are special enough or a lot of my friends are talking about it.

Is there any particular type of advertising you don’t like seeing?
Definitely, I have a long list of ads that I don’t want to see. I can’t stand offensive ads created by some shallow minded advertisers. Gender biased ads are on top of the list. They are misleading or manipulative. They put a lot of pressure on women who are trapped by the idea of being a so-called perfect wife. Such ads should be banned as they promote gender inequality and have a negative impact on society. TV advertising is now regulated more strictly but there are still a large number of unacceptable ads all over the internet.
