It is more important to spend public money on promoting a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent illness than to spend it on the treatments of people who are already ill. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that the government should invest more in healthy living promotion than on the treatments of ill citizens. I disagree with this idea because I believe both of these areas are vital to a strong and equitable healthcare system.

On the one hand, encouraging the public to take preventive measures tends to be less costly and more effective in building a healthy population. Individuals can stay fit simply by following a balanced diet, avoiding destructive habits and exercising consistently. This will not only benefit themselves but also be of immense help to the public health sectors. If people are pursuing a healthy lifestyle, they are less likely to fall ill, thus alleviating the unnecessary workloads and financial burdens on healthcare systems.

On the other hand, it would be unjustifiable to leave citizens who are suffering from severe or terminal diseases untreated. A fundamental reason for this is that everyone should be given an equal opportunity to lead a healthy and happy life. In addition, certain types of cancers, amenia or cardiac conditions are inherited or associated with genetic disorders, which cannot be prevented. Finally, treating infected people in hospitals might be the only way to contain an epidemic such as the Covid-19. A lack of funding on the treatments of such unknown infections would also lead to failure in finding viable cures, vaccines or other preventive measures.

In conclusion, I believe prevention and treatment of diseases are equally important in public healthcare. The government should divert adequate fundings to both of these areas since a healthy population is considered the most valuable asset of any nations.  (261 words)
