Is politeness important?
Absolutely, being courteous is a reliable sign of a well-educated and well-mannered individual. It is commonly said that “respect others and they will respect you”. Respectful people will be treated kindly and generously while those who appear to be rude or impolite might be disrespected or worse isolated. Most importantly, human societies have been built on good conduct, social norms and defined etiquette. Without them, the world would probably turn into a chaos.
How can people show their politeness to others?
No doubt, there are a plethora of ways for people to show respect for others and they are expected to do so anywhere anytime. Like for instance, young people should offer their seats to the elderly on public transport or gentlemen should open doors for ladies. Students can express their courtesy to teachers through attentive listening and active engagement in the lesson. At home, children can be polite to older family members by lending them a hand or taking part in doing chores.
What factors influence politeness?
That’s a tough question really. Let me think for a second. Well, the most significant factors might include formal education and family upbringing. Those who have obtained a degree are more likely to be well-mannered than their non-graduate peers. Additionally, children growing up in a stable family tend to be politer than those who come from a dysfunctional household. The bottom line is that the external environment rather than genetic codes could decide how well a person behave.
How is politeness different from country to country?
It is true that citizens in certain countries like Japan or the UK are generally politer than those in other nations. This phenomenon can be attributed to a number of factors but I guess the underlying reasons might include living conditions and culture. Nations with an equal and advanced standard of living are more likely to offer their residents an opportunity to lead a contented life, so they might be pleasant and kind by nature. In addition, countries that have an established tradition of being polite and civil might be able to maintain their impeccable codes of conduct from generation to generation.
