Why are designer clothes (designer fashion brands) becoming popular?
Well, the first reason behind increasing popularity of designer clothes and designer goods in general is quality. From my experience, I feel confident and worry – free when purchasing ready-made clothes in a high-end designer boutique or showroom. They might cost a fortune but they guarantee top-quality fabric, unique design and elaborate workmanship. I believe they offer better value for money compared to cheap but poorly-made garments of unknown brands. Furthermore, designer clothes, especially of luxury brands, are considered a status symbol that few people can afford. A dress design may become trendy overnight simply because a famous actress just wore it on TV or just uploaded a photo of her wearing it on social media. Celebrity endorsements lead to greater demand for high end fashion.
Why are designer clothes/ goods so expensive?
People are willing to pay a great deal of money for designer clothes because they are original and it takes a lot more time and effort to make them than mass-produced items. From designing to choosing fabric, cutting, sewing, fitting and adjusting, the designers have to put in not just their talents and creativity but also a lot of working hours. Aside from that, we also need to factor in the cost of fabric and other materials: the better quality they offer, the more costly they are. In addition, luxury fashion brands spend huge amounts of money on shop locations, fashion shows, celebrity endorsements, photographers, models and so on. Most importantly, I think a high price range is ultimately a smart marketing strategy. They deliberately produce a limited quantity and set unaffordable prices to make their products even more desirable.
Is it important for fashion designers to be up to date with fashion trends?
I think it depends. Definitely, it’s essential for fast-fashion makers or little-known designers to stay on top of current trends. This, however, seems irrelevant for world-class designers in luxury fashion houses like D&G or Chanel because they create the trends themselves.
Do you think fashion is more important than comfort?
Well, it’s a tough question. I guess every women face this dilemma when shopping for a special outfit to wear on a particular occasion. Sometimes, style doesn’t go hand in hand with comfort and we have to make a tradeoff between them. For casual wear, I will definitely go for comfort but if I’m looking for a dress to wear on my friend’s wedding, I may pick up a piece that makes me look stylish and elegant even though I don’t really feel comfortable wearing it.
What are the differences between old generation and young generation in terms of fashion?
Well I think young people pay more attention to the way they dress because how they look is extremely important. Fashion is a significant and obvious way to express themselves. Also, they are more open to new trends and fads. For example, teenagers with bold personality are now commonly seen with super ripped jeans and super short crop tops, which were once considered unacceptable to older generations.
Of course, when people get older, especially when they have a family to support and children to take care of, fashion and keeping up with the latest trends will no longer be their priority. Generally, old people are more aware of function rather than fashion.
