What kinds of products are often advertised in VN?

Oh anything you could ever imagine. We are bombarded with adverts on the streets, in supermarkets, on TV and on the Internet. They are ubiquitous and usually extremely annoying. The most widely advertised products and services are fundamental goods like food, medicine and shampoos. Wellness and beauty products are also increasingly advertised because people have become more conscious of their health and appearance.

What kinds of advertisements are common in Vietnam?

Well, there is a wide range of adverts I encounter every single day, from billboards and leaflets on the street to pop-ups on the Internet. But I suppose the most intrusive ones are video commercials on Youtube and sponsored posts on Facebook or Instagram. No matter how annoying or creepy they might be, I can’t skip or block all of them.

Do you think advertising on TV is more effective than advertising on social media?

I would say that it really depends on the aim of the advert. For sales, social media might be more appropriate because it’s easier to call for potential customers to take immediate actions such as enquiring about the sponsored product or even placing an order. However, for brand awareness I believe TV can make a better advertising channel as TV commercials tend to be more strictly censored and thus more trustworthy. Again, advertising on TV might be insanely expensive but I think it’s all worth it if companies can afford it.

Why do companies hire celebrities to advertise their products?

Without a doubt, the principal reason is that celebrities can exert enormous influence on a large number of people who idolize them. Celebrity endorsement is probably more powerful than any other forms of advertising because fans tend to worship their idols and trust their choices of products and services. For instance, whenever Song Hye Kyo, a globally renowned Korean actress uses a certain makeup product in a celebrated movie, it will instantly sell like hot cakes.
