Many companies sponsor sports events as a way to advertise themselves. Some people think this is good for the world of sports, while others think there are disadvantages of this. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
These days, sponsoring sports events for commercial purposes is becoming increasingly popular across the globe. Some believe that corporate sponsorship is beneficial for the world of sports while many think otherwise. From my perspective, I strongly believe that the benefits it brings are far greater than its potential drawbacks.
On the one hand, sponsoring sporting events might have undesirable impacts on sports. Firstly, the reputation of such events tend to be closely associated with the brand image of their sponsors. If sponsoring companies are involved in illegal business practices such as providing poor-quality or unhealthy products, the competitions or tournaments sponsored by them might also be unfavoured by the public. In addition, by providing financial resources for certain sports teams or events, corporations might have some say over their operation, leading to serious repercussions for athletes. For instance, they might feel under enormous pressure to win at a major competition in order to leverage their sponsors’ fame, which may undermine their performance.
On the other hand, it is undeniable that sport sponsorship can offer dazzling benefits to the world of sports and those involved. Without billions of dollars from prominent sponsors such as Coca-Cola and P&G, the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games would not have been successfully organized. Furthermore, when sports teams are financed by corporate funding, they can not only gain access to advanced facilities and coaching but also be relieved from financial pressure, and thus be able to focus more on their training. This might result in their outstanding performances at renowned sporting events, which would be a huge source of pride for the sponsoring businesses and the sponsored athletes alike. Take the National Football Team of Vietnam as a prime example, since they were funded by local corporations, they have won major competitions in the region such as SEA Games or AFF Cup for the first time.
In conclusion, while corporate sponsorship might have detrimental impacts on professional sports, I incline to the view that its merits are far more significant. As long as sports events’ boards of committees are cautious about choosing their sponsors, there should be no noticeable downsides.
