In today’s world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value artists such as musicians, painters and writers. Why is this the case? What can art tell us about life that science and technology cannot?
In recent decades, a greater emphasis has been placed on the advancement of science and technology with a view to yielding more breakthroughs. However, this does not mean that art has been overlooked. In fact, artists and their works or performances are still highly valued by tech-savvy individuals.
This phenomenon is mainly attributed to the fact that art allows people to lead a balanced and fulfilling life. Unquestionably, technology has made modern life much easier and more comfortable. At the same time, technology has encouraged people to follow a hectic lifestyle. In order to keep up with technological trends, many people now have to work harder to acquire more material possessions such as the latest models of cars, household appliances, computers and smartphones. Therefore, they tend to feel stressed out or even burned out despite being surrounded by time-saving devices. On the other hand, the arts allow people to relax and enrich their spiritual life. By listening to music, watching hilarious comedies or admiring renowned paintings such as the Mona Lisa, people can relieve their work-related stress and enjoy life more.
It is true that art possesses unique power technologies cannot offer. While science and technology depict the world as it is through facts and figures, art enables individuals to create and live in their dream world through unlimited creativity and imagination. This explains why art can help people escape from the hustle and bustle of their daily life. Furthermore, art can inspire individuals to do good, to improve themselves and to better the world around them as well. Science and technologies can make people understand their feelings but art can arouse certain emotions in its audience and urge them to take appropriate actions. For example, children tend to idolize and emulate their favorite fictional characters such as Superman or Harry Potter, which means that art can nurture great virtues and qualities in people through captivating storytelling.
