How old were you when you started school?

Well, it’s been such a long time. If I remember correctly, I was 6 when I attended the first grade at our local elementary school.  On my first day, just like my peers, I cried my eyes out for being separated from my parents and being confined in a strange place all of a sudden. That was quite an embarrassing experience.

How did you get to primary school each day?

My mom took me to school for the first two week. It was just a five-minute walk from my house but perhaps she  must have been worried that I might play truant without her. Later, as I had grown fonder of school life and managed to make quite a few friends, she allowed me to walk by myself.

What activities did you like to do at primary school?

Well, back then I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the national curriculum for primary schools in Vietnam. It was focused too much on basic literacy and numeracy: spelling, reading, writing, calculating and so on. Anyway, I did enjoy our art and craft course, especially the paper cutting sessions which provided an outlet for my creativity.

Have you ever returned to see your primary school again?

No. I wish I had come back earlier. I’ve passed by it a few times when being back in my hometown. However, I didn’t find the courage to enter its gate once again. Everything seems to have changed drastically.  Now that most of my old teachers have retired, I see no point in returning to a place where I could be no one but a complete stranger.
