What kinds of leisure activities for kids are popular in Vietnam?

(ideas: in the city: reading, playing video games, going to amusement parks, in the countryside: hanging out with friends to play games like football or hide and seek => Reason: cities are crowded and have limited outdoor space while rural areas have vast open space)

Do you think boys and girls enjoy the same free time activities?

Well yes and no. Both share some favorite activities in common such as listening to music, playing digital games or watching funny videos on social media. However, boys are more likely to engage in physical activities such as playing football than girls who tend to prefer sedentary activities like playing with their dolls or cooking toys.

Do you think children did the same activities in the past?

Of course not. Modern technologies have encouraged young people to lead a sedentary lifestyle and become less interested in outdoor leisure activities. In the past, children used to enjoy their spare time outdoors because there weren’t many things to do at home. Today, however, there is a wide range of fascinating activities for children to kill their time at home, such as playing video games, surfing social media, watching the latest movies on Netflix, the list could go on and on.

Do you think children have enough free time today?

I’m not sure about other countries but in Vietnam I suppose they are usually deprived of precious leisure time. This is mainly because their parents and teachers are expecting too much from them and pushing them too hard. They often go to school full time 6 days a week and even have to attend extra classes at night and on Sunday with the view of achieving exceptional grades to please their family, and that’s a real shame (= that’s bad).

Do you think children in VN should have more free time?

Oh yes very much so. Without a doubt, leisure time is vital for anyone regardless of age. Children even need more spare time than adults I believe. Their bodies and minds are yet to fully develop so it’s cruel to force them to work or study around the clock (=all day). Not to mention, playing has been scientifically proven to be of paramount importance to their cognitive, emotional and social development. But how can they play if they have no free time right?

Do you think parents should organize leisure activities for their kids?

I’m afraid I disagree. While parents’ supervision is necessary to ensure that children spend their free time wisely and safely, I dont think it’s a good idea for adults to get too involved. Especially when it comes to playing, spontaneous play is seen as more effective and beneficial for children’s growth than organized games because it can foster/ sharpen their critical thinking, problem solving and creative skills. Of course, adults do need to keep an eye on their kids but they should never force their own ways on them.

What kinds of leisure activities do Vietnamese people like? Why?

In cities, there is a wide range of activities for urban citizens to enjoy their leisure time. The most preferred ones include reading, watching movies, dining out, going to amusement parks or chilling out at shopping malls. Besides, doing exercise is also popular, especially among adults. Many are keen on running, jogging, and brisk walking, such sort of things. In the countryside, however, most people are fond of going fishing or gardening, and of course they can enjoy them free of charge.

Do you think old people have more leisure time than young people?

I do think so. Most old people have retired from work and their children have also grown up so there are almost no commitments to occupy their time. The thing is that their health tends to decline rapidly so they might find it hard to truly enjoy their ample leisure time.

Do you think people nowadays have less leisure time than people in the past?

Yeah, it’s totally true. In the past, people used to work hard but their working day ended when they left their office. Today, it’s easy to bring work home just with a laptop or a smartphone. Many people have to stay up late or even work during the weekends and as a result, they don’t have sufficient time to relax and enjoy life.

What types of leisure activities may become more popular in the future?

Well, …
