Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and changing climate, food insecurity has become a huge challenge facing the globe. These days, however, an increasing number of young people are unwilling to work in the agriculture industry. This is mainly due to urbanization and I firmly believe it is imperative to encourage young generations’ participation in farming.

The decline of young workforce in the farming sector can be primarily attributed to rapid urbanization that is taking place all over the world. Most of the young in rural areas often move to major cities in search of better education and employment opportunities, and then reside there,  leaving only old people working on farms  in the countryside. Even if many young workers struggle and become tired of exhausting lifestyles in the city, they are not likely to return or relocate to rural areas as it is tough to find a job that matches their qualifications and skills. Added to that, it is the nature of farming that has made the young uninterested in this field. Agricultural work is commonly seen as labor-intensive, low-paying, unglamorous and highly vulnerable to severe weather.

I strongly believe that the involvement of young generations in agriculture should be encouraged. Firstly, farming plays a key role in making countries become more self-reliant and self-sufficient, which is particularly crucial in this ever-changing world. As food is a fundamental need, the ability of a nation to feed and nourish all citizens should be given priority or they will face disastrous consequences. During the Covid-19 pandemic, for example, lock down measures in many countries have suspended international trade, leading to a severe shortage and escalating prices of food products.
