Thanks to a higher standard of living in many countries, people are increasingly buying a wider range of foods from other regions and nations. This could have adverse impacts on the economy and the environment, and therefore many advocate consumption of local foods only. I, however, incline to the view that the drawbacks of this are far greater than the benefits.
Admittedly, restricting food consumption to local products only could offer considerable benefits. This helps boost the local economy, which in turn generates greater employment opportunities and higher income. In addition, if people sourced their food exclusively from farmers in their region, the adverse impacts of food transportation on the environment would be reduced significantly. There would be lower carbon emissions and less packaging waste since long-distance shipment is not required.
However, I believe the drawbacks of this change would be far greater than the mentioned benefits. International food trade plays a crucial role in national and global economies. If food surpluses were discarded instead of being traded, massive resources involved in their production would go to waste. Furthermore, the restriction of food imports and exports might have knock-on effects on complementary industries such as wholesaling, retailing, logistics and advertising. This would threaten the global economy’s sustainable growth.
Another demerit of consuming only local food is probably a lowered quality of life. Children, for example, are less likely to enjoy their meals and stay healthy if they are fed with unvaried diets on a daily basis. Similarly, international travellers tend to have a less enjoyable holiday overseas when they have a hard time finding foods appealing to their taste in another distant country.
In conclusion, while the consumption of imported foods might have undesirable impacts on local economies and the environment, I believe buying local food products only have far more downsides than benefits. Greater efforts and investment, however, should be diverted into the promotion of innovative and eco-friendly food business practices.

I incline to the view that its benefits are more significant than its adverse effects on the environement and local business.
Admittedly, a higher demand for imported foods could have serious repercussions on local economies and the environment. Local food producers might go out of business when their products are less favoured on the market. In addition, the transportation of foods across the globe contributes significantly to the rise of carbon emissions and air pollution. Excessive food packaging for long-distance shipment also represents a serious environmental concern.
However, increased demand for imported foods can greatly boost national and global economies. It helps promote exports and imports of food products across international and regional borders. Local wholesale, retail, logistics and advertising businesses also tend to thrive when domestic demand rises. This in turn helps generate greater employment opportunities and higher income for society as a whole.
Another crucial benefit of increasingly diverse diets is improved quality of life. Children, for example, are more likely to enjoy their meals and stay healthy if they are fed with varied foods on a daily basis. Similarly, international travellers tend to have a smooth and enjoyable holiday overseas when they do not have to worry about finding foods that appeals to their taste in another distant country.
In conclusion, while the need for a wider range of foods might have undesirable impacts on local economies and the environment, I believe its benefits for society as a whole are far greater. More efforts, however, should be invested in the promotion of innovative and eco-friendly food business practices.
