The question as to whether children should start formal learning as soon as possible or they should only begin their academic journey when reaching the age of seven has remained a contentious topic for parents. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and then I will give my own perspective.
On the one hand, children starting school earlier might have a head start over others. Formative years constitute a critical learning period that defines the future of a child. If children begin formal education early, they will be taught by professionally trained pedagogical experts. This may help identify and nurture their innate talents from a very young age, making them well-positioned for great accomplishments later in life. In addition, these children are likely to become independent and mature earlier than their peers thanks to positive social interactions and peer competition at school.
However, I believe children should spend their early years playing and discovering the world instead of attending schools. They have many years ahead for formal learning but childhood only comes once and its fond memories stay forever. Those who are able to enjoy a carefree childhood, tend to lead a more balanced and fulfilling life. Furthermore, preschoolers might learn even more effectively and faster through play and self-discovery. By enjoying quality time with their family, they can acquire crucial life skills and moral values such as hard work, kindness and self-discipline that pave the way for a meaningful life. Above all, if children are able to play outdoors and explore the world around them, not only their cognitive skills but also their social skills will be sharpened in a spontaneous and less stressful way compared to school life. This may make them better-prepared for academia than those who are forced to start formal education early.
In conclusion, both sides of the argument have their own merits. I, however, incline to the view that parents should only send their offspring to school when they reach seven. This allows children to enjoy a normal childhood and become more ready for their academic journey.
